Hello and welcome to the 2025 BarthHaas HopUpdates!
Germany
Harvest Germany
The hop harvest will come to an end in all German hop-growing regions over the next few days. The Herkules variety is currently being harvested. During the harvest, there was repeated rainfall and temperatures were moderate.
Yields of the Perle and Hallertauer Tradition are average to slightly above average across the entire Hallertau region. No clear statement can be made at this time for the largest variety in terms of area, Herkules, as harvesting is still ongoing. However, average to slightly above-average yields are also expected for this variety. We therefore currently expect to achieve a harvest of around 43,200 tons in Germany. This would exceed the official harvest estimate of 41,235 tons.
The alpha acid levels of the aroma varieties are average to slightly above average. There are still too few values available for the high alpha varieties, but we currently expect average alpha acid levels as well.
In terms of diseases and pests, the Aroma varieties show good external quality, although the pressure from red spider mites posed challenges for many growers throughout the growing season. This may affect the quality of individual varieties.
Yields in the Tettnang growing region are slightly lower this year. In contrast, alpha values are slightly above average.
A slightly below-average harvest is currently expected in the Elbe-Saale region.
The intake of certified hops from European growing regions is in full swing. As soon as the findings on the qualities and alpha acid contents of the various varieties from the respective growing regions have been confirmed, the Working Group for Hop Analysis (AHA) will announce the annual averages.
Harvest other growing areas
Czech Republic
In Czech Republic, harvesting took place from mid-August to mid-September. Harvesting conditions were good. The external quality of the hops is correspondingly good.
Harvest volumes are at an average level. We currently expect a harvest volume of around 6,500 tons. The most commonly grown variety in the Czech Republic, Saaz, is yielding better results than in previous years. The yields of the other varieties are even above average. The alpha values are at an average level and, depending on the region, are even slightly above the long-term average.
Harvest Czech Republic
Slovenia
All Slovenian hop farms have already completed their harvest. Due to extreme weather conditions—highly variable temperatures, heavy rainfall, and periods of drought—yields are below average. This has affected all varieties. The Savinjski Golding, Celeia, and Aurora varieties were particularly hard hit. Despite low pre-contract quotas, some contracts were not fulfilled due to low yields. We expect a harvest of 2,100 tons. The quality of the hops, on the other hand, is good.
Poland
In Poland, harvesting will continue until next week. Therefore, not much yield data is available yet. We currently estimate the harvest at 3,000 tons, which is slightly below average.
USA
The harvest in the USA is almost complete in the three main growing regions of Oregon, Idaho, and Yakima. Some late-maturing varieties and high-alpha varieties are still being harvested.
Yields are slightly better than estimated. With a possible total production of approximately 37,500 tons (including non-PNW), a slightly above-average harvest can be achieved across all US growing regions.
At the beginning of September, the harvest in the Yakima Valley was temporarily restricted by heavy smoke caused by nearby bush fires. However, a change in weather conditions quickly remedied the situation. Nevertheless, some growers suspended harvesting for one to two days to prevent the smoke from affecting the hop aroma. Water reserves are almost depleted at the end of the growing season, and hopes are high for above-average winter precipitation.
