Declining hop acreage – Germany back in first place
Hop Acreage
Hop Area under Cultivation
Global hop acreage in crop year 2024 amounted to 55,715 ha – which was 4,630 ha down year on year. In Germany, acreage declined by 340 ha, while in the USA it fell by 4,032 ha. This meant that for the first time since 2015 Germany was again the world’s biggest hop producer.
Further details on hop acreage, hop production volume and alpha volume in the world’s 29 hop-producing countries can be found in the full BarthHaas Report – now available for download.
Lower hop volume despite higher average acreage yield
Hop Production
Harvest Yield
The volume of hops harvested worldwide in 2024 was 113,528 metric tons, which was 4,622 mt lower year on year.
Although average yield per hectare rose, the decline in acreage of 7.7 % caused overall crop volume to fall by 3.9 %.
The crop was made up of 53% aroma hops and 47% bitter hops. The share of aroma hops declined by 4 % compared with 2023, while that of bitter hops increased correspondingly.
The two most important hop-growing countries Germany and the USA together produced 76 % of world hop volume. Germany accounted for 41 % and the USA 35 %.
The volume of alpha produced exceeds the demand
Hop Alpha Production
Hop Alpha Production
Despite lower acreage and a smaller hop production volume, the hop alpha yield worldwide in crop year 2024 was 119 mt higher.
World production has exceeded demand since the 2020 brewing year. Inventory levels in the brewing industry range from well stocked to heavily overstocked with some varieties.
Beer output remains stable
Beer Production
World Beer Production
The total volume of beer brewed worldwide in 2024 was 1,875 million hectoliters.
In the Americas, output fell by 1.3 %, mainly due to a decline of 9.2m hl in the USA. In Europe output rose by 1.1 %. The key factor here was growth of 7.4m hl in Russia. Asia posted a decline of 2.3 %, while Africa grew significantly by 6.7 %.
